Due to restrictions imposed on manufacturers to meet strict emissions standards, Modern Diesel engines are fitted with EGR systems, making them prone to clogged up intake manifold components, eventually choking the engine from airflow. This issue usually presents after around 100,000 kms and is more common in vehicles driven for short distances, or vehicles doing lots of stop/start driving.
EGR systems recirculate exhaust gases back through the engine via the intake manifold to reduce engine emissions and when combined with the oil vapors which are also returned through the intake manifold from the crankcase breather, causes a build-up of carbon sludge, which if not removed, will choke the intake system causing loss of power, poor fuel economy and engine fault codes. The only effective option to resolve this is to remove the EGR valve, intake manifold and inlet components and manually clean them using chemicals, ultrasonic cleaning, and pressure washers to return the components to an as new condition, getting your vehicle back on the road and running just like new.
Some workshops and mechanics offer an “On Vehicle” Carbon cleans. We do not reccomend customers go this route.
The “on-vehicle” carbon cleaning techniques (like hydrogen cleaning, chemical sprays, or fuel additives) are often marketed as quick fixes.
When you see the volume of carbon that is removed from clogged intakes, there is no way you would want that flushed through your systems and critical components such as valves, sensors, catalytic coverters, DPF filters etc…
Drawbacks of On-Vehicle Carbon Cleaning
Superficial Results – It only loosens some surface carbon, not the heavy, baked-on deposits deep in the intake, EGR, or manifold.
Temporary Fix – Engines often feel smoother for a short while, but carbon builds up again quickly without a thorough clean.
Risk of Loosened Debris – Partially dislodged carbon can break off and clog injectors, valves, or even cause engine damage if not fully cleared.
Limited Reach – Doesn’t effectively clean areas with stubborn buildup.
No Inspection Opportunity – Mechanics miss the chance to visually check and assess wear, cracks, or component damage since nothing is disassembled.
Questionable Value – Customers may pay for repeated treatments rather than one thorough clean, making it more costly long term.
That’s why many serious workshops (like Sunshine Coast 4WD Centre ) prefer off-vehicle intake manifold cleaning – it’s more effective, longer lasting, and safer for the engine.
As a preventative measure after cleaning of your carbon build up, we recommend installation of a Catch can to capture the oil vapor before it enters the intake system, reducing the amount of oil entering the intake and causing this build up again in the future.
